“I’m Not Scared Of Mixing Anymore”

A five-day mixing course for producers, artists and engineers who know their tools, but want a way of thinking that connects every decision to a reason.
This happens through the Framework that I’ve developed after years of mixing and years of teaching.

Every mix feels like starting from zero

You reach for plugins and techniques without really knowing whether they'll work, whether they're the right tool for the song, or what the song even needs in the first place. Every mix feels like starting from zero and you don't know whether you'll succeed or not. I had that for a decade, then realised the missing piece isn't more techniques, certainly not more plugins: it's a way of thinking that can change absolutely everything.

The Transformation from Day 1 to Day 5

MONDAY TO FRIDAY

This is what happened the first time I ran this course:

On Monday

I asked the room a simple question: what does this song need? The answers were the ones I expected because I see them a lot, and I've been there myself for years: "maybe some compression for more punch?", "maybe a cut around 250Hz for mud?". All tools and guesses, oddly specific and strangely uncertain at the same time, and when I asked why, nobody could really tell me.

On Friday

I asked the same question, and one of the answers was this: "it needs more sense of longing, without losing the grounding that comes from the shape of the drums, so we leave the drums alone and bring the midrange of the guitars forward". They then reached for the relevant plugins and settings.

Same students, five days apart.

I had chills: the Framework works.

How the week works

Six people in a working mixing studio, with a mix (hehe) of prepared multitracks to maximise learning, and the participant's mixes to apply the framework effectively. The same questions come back again and again, through guided decisions and group discussion, until the framework replaces the habit.

This is deliberately not a tips course: you can’t change strong habits by reading or hearing about better ones, they have to change through correction and practice in a controlled environment, which is exactly what the week is built around.

    • How to choose the right one to hack the listener's brain.

    Afternoon (14:00–17:00) — Decision-making time: hands-on mixing

    • Applying the morning's thinking to shared material.

    • Comparison of the outcomes of choices in the room.

  • Morning (10:00–13:00) — The tools of the trade and how they impact emotional response

    • A practical guide to making decisions about EQ, compression, transient shaping, saturation, etc.

    Afternoon (14:00–17:00) — Decision-making time: hands-on mixing

    • Applying the morning's thinking to shared material.

    • Comparison of the outcomes of choices in the room.

  • Morning (10:00–13:00) — Parallel processing

    • A very deliberate approach and techniques.

    Afternoon (14:00–17:00) — Advanced compression techniques

    • How to know when to use them.

    • Multi-band compression, multi-bus compression, sidechain, upward, etc.

  • Morning (10:00–13:00) — How to keep learning and how to build your own method

    • Create and populate the mixing diary.

    • Self-critique habits for after the course ends.

    Afternoon (14:00–17:00) — Decision-making time: hands-on mixing

    • Final session pulling the week together.

    • Defending each move out loud, with feedback on the full decision chain.

  • By the end of the week, participants will walk away with a way of thinking that connects the technical to the musical. A methodology they can apply to any mix, any genre, any material. And the ability to explain their decisions to a client, a collaborator, or themselves.
